Summer may be a time for fun, but the endless sweltering heat and high humidity day after day can get old fast, leaving you itching for something you can do to beat the heat. This is especially true if your air conditioner doesn’t work so well, making life at home a difficult, frustrating, and sticky mess. If you need a great idea for something to do or where to find some much needed respite from the summer heat, here are four cool ideas that are unique to our community here in Pennsylvania!
If you’ve been to Dutch Springs, you’re in for a real treat. Widely regarded as one of, if not the best water park in the state, Dutch Springs isn’t your typical source for water slides, wading pools, and other typical water park attractions, but rather the park features a massive collection of inflatables that you can climb, jump off, slide down, and bounce on! The park is easily accessible from anywhere in the Lehigh Valley area, located in Bethlehem. Whether you want to go for the day, stay for the weekend, or host a party, this local swimming treasure has it all. It’s also a popular spot for scuba divers with exciting dives like submerged structures and even sunken airplanes!
Want a more traditional waterpark? Allentown’s got you covered! Wildwater Kingdom is located at Dorney Park, just to the east of central Allentown. This summer hotspot is full of water slides, wading pools, and attractions for people of all ages. When you’re done hitting the pool, head next door to Dorney Park, which features some of the best roller coasters in the state.
The Shore Hershey Park
Located roughly an hour’s drive to the west from Allentown, this historic theme park features a great selection of water attractions. The East Coast Waterworks and Tidal Force attractions are immensely popular, and adults who simply want to relax can use one of the numerous available cabanas. While not as large as Wildwater Kingdom, this park is located inside the Hersheypark amusement park, the historic park themed for the locally-based candy producer, including references to facorites like Jolly Rancher, Resse’s, and Twizzlers. It’s also a reasonable driving distance, making it an excellent day trip for those looking to stay cool and enjoy a day of fun.
Ricketts Glen State Park
Ricketts Glen State Park is about two hours’ drive away from the Lehigh Valley area, making it a bit more of a trek to get to. However, for those who enjoy being in nature and hiking through beautiful forests along trickling streams, swimming in a cool, refreshing lake, camping, boating, or fishing, this natural wonder has a lot to offer. The 26 miles of hiking trails lead you past lots of beautiful scenery, and the Falls Trail, while difficult for inexperienced hikers, leads you past several of the park’s magnificent waterfalls where you can feel the refreshing mist on your face.
